COSIM Sponsors

We are supported primarily by the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science, but also receive support from a number of other sponsors for smaller projects. We gratefully acknowledge the following sponsors.

US DOE Climate Change Prediction Program

This program in the Climate and Environmental Sciences Division of the Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) in the DOE Office of Science funds all of our model development efforts in ocean, sea ice and land ice modeling. This support forms the core of the COSIM project. In addition, this program provides support for two additional projects focused on Investigating the Magnitudes and Probabilities of Abrupt Climate Change (IMPACTS) and Improving the Characterization of Clouds, Aerosols and the Cryosphere in Climate Models.

US DOE Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) program

This program funds two projects in COSIM. The first, funded out of the BER part of SciDAC?, is a multi-lab effort entitled Scalable and Extensible Earth System Model for Climate Change Science that is focused on improving the Community Climate System Model (CCSM) through the addition of new physical and biogeochemical processes as well as improvements for computational performance on advanced architectures. A second project funds our involvement in the Earth System Grid.

US DOE Methane Hydrate Program

This program funds a joint project with colleagues at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (Moridis and Reagan) that is creating a coupled model to simulate the fate of methane hydrates as they are released from sea floor sediments into the ocean. This tool will be used to evaluate the likelihood of climate changes due to large methane hydrate releases.

UC/LANL Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics

IGPP has funded several joint project with University collaborators in sea ice, ice sheet and ocean modeling. In addition, IGPP frequently supports COSIM workshops and visitors.

Past support

In the past, we have also received support through the National Ocean Partnership Program and LANL's Laboratory Directed Research and Development.
